‘THIS ISLAND CITY – Portsmouth in Poetry’
7pm-10pm
£4
Join us in a celebration of Portsmouth’s literary heritage with readings from Denise Bennett, Pauline Hawkesworth, George Marsh, Stuart Oleska, Maggie Sawkins and others. Those contributing to the book are also invited to read their poem.
Some of the poems in THIS ISLAND CITY are classics. Others were collected from the archives of the city and the Royal Navy; some were offered by well-known poets such as John Hegley and U A Fanthorpe. Many, the work of poets of all ages and walks of life, were sent in by readers of The News, listeners to local radio and members of Portsmouth’s poetry and literature societies.
‘This is a book which endeavours to bring the city to life, showing its character and its people, revealing its scars of war and poverty, and also its beauty. ‘This Island City’ is a first, and I hope that it will be the trailblazer for more and more poetry about this fascinating city.’ SHEILA HANCOCK
Copies of THIS ISLAND CITY – Portsmouth in Poetry will be for sale at the event.
